"Some people understand that the small things make a difference. A nice pen to write with that slides perfectly on the page. Hot coffee in a particular cup. These things matter when your soul is on the edge. It fills you full of holes, this life."
Ruth Fitzmaurice, Irish Times 4th January 2016
I truly and deeply believe in this. When I read that sentence last winter it connected.
Finally somebody, who so deeply understands, how feeling, experiencing, looking and finding beauty, strength, elegance, balance and more in little things is keeping your feet firmly anchored in the ground, is spinning a fine, but strong net around your you, stopping your whole being from chattering or going over the edge when life's demand push you to much.
Mental health, the firm core of a me and a big together, subtlety and strength, balance and anchoring.
Again and again I am coming back to the above, sending little hooks to hold me, to ensure I am not flying away and breaking all bridges behind to search for things I can only discover in myself.
Smelling the hair of my son, moving into the crook of my husbands arms, touching my favourite shawl, marveling in apfelmus, smelling fresh ironed linen, a perfect number combination, a flowing jokes at work, the wind on my sunday morning run, being soaked by rain and kissed by sun.
In this crazy world full of hate, war, hunger, anger, frustration, greed, it is all the little beautiful things full of love, that create the balance. Keep reminding myself.
The little acts of kindness, the big smiles of little people, the little gestures of love, when there is no time or means for grand gestures.
The things your skin feel and sense.
Touching things, seeing things, listening, tasting, sensing life in its depth and core, fully concentrating on what is there and now and the strength and calm within this.
Being kind and just giving with no expectations.
Creating small islands in this wild sea of life and you never know sooner and later they may become bigger, more restful places, a shore, a beach, a forest, a house, a hammock, a garden.
The storm may pass, and you will enjoy the sea of life with all its treasures from calmer water.
